PG: Psycho Goreman

2020 Directed by Steven Kotanski

Horror Marathon 2024 Day 17 Film 33

Mimi and her brother find some strange alien device and accidently free an alien from prison. The alien is some planet killing machine- with powers that easily burst through skulls or cause someone's torment for 1000 years. Thankfully Mimi can control the creature without any fear.

Really this is a campy 90s kid show with overblown gratuitous violence. Most of the humor is purposefully stiff, with the alien delivering some bombastic line and the girl loving it like some 90s kid commercial with surreal in your face aesthetics that the parents won't understand. As a Power Rangers fan of the time I can understand why this time period was totally rad- but all of the humor in this version seems especially dimwitted.

The backstory is pretty bland- setting up an interesting antagonist, but otherwise there's little reason to pay attention to the plot. Also the action of those shows was a huge part of the draw; here we have this cool grotesque character and the eventual antagonist makes you think they'll have an epic gory battle, and they end up playing some made up game from Mimi. Mimi is a burst of energy though, able to be quippy enough to play off the monotonous alien that she dubs Psycho Goreman- for extra coolness factor. Thankfully the film doesn't take itself very seriously, but there never really seemed to be a big payoff.

Lord Zedd would kick PG's ass. Just sayin'
