Horror Marathon 2024 Day 24 Film 49

Splatter comedy tends to be the kind of horror that a lot of horror fans gravitate to-- and this film is openly showing its fandom on its sleeves like something made for a fan convention- Evil Dead, Romero zombies, and Jackson's Braindead levels of blood.

The opening scroll already shows the mythology that the film wants to present- some primordial evil that was before lucifer and even was utilized to resurrect Jesus. So for a good part of the film they redo these moments- with some sacrificial "lamb" - a teenager who keeps running into problems with his testicles. That sets the tone of juvenile humor- meandering historical bloody snippets with a boring birthday dinner with people with shitty personalities.

There's also a romance subplot for some reason- complete with a trench coat and having fantastical sex with one of the women at the dinner. Throw in an Evil Dead like occult book and you've got yourself a zombie apocalypse. Although the film has a lot of amateur acting and Z-level edgelord script- you've gotta love the level of detail for the special effects. Truly gonzo with heads bursting open- bodies maimed, and extra "coolness" factor added in with chainsaw kills.

The film doesn't cut away from the graphic violence- but it all pours on so much gross it becomes absurd- which contrasts to harder to watch films that have fewer gory scenes. Funnily though I probably found the snot ball rolling to be one of the grossest moments *gag* The film lulls when it's trying to retell all of the mythology with largely inane storytelling without the great camerawork of Evil Dead. If you appreciate some bombastic toilet humor and gore effects it's a treat- with a kill count for good measure.
