It’s What’s Inside

Horror Marathon 2024 Day 12 Film 25

A party game goes awry with body swapping hijinks. It all feels a bit on the level of Scooby-Doo spookiness as the late 20's anxiety pits old friendships to the brink. The film sadly doesn't play with the psychology of each of the six characters beyond a character sketch- the Instagram queen, the fuckup dude, the Asian girl, the spiritual girl, the black entrepreneur, the nerdy white entrepreneur, and the bickering couple.

Most of the focus of the film seems to be on how each of the characters feels some want to be or be with the Instagram queen. In that sense it lacks a core reason for these people to be friends in the first place, aside from a shallow reason that they all agreed to be together again after they all split up due to a shit party 10 years ago. Although the place is a mansion there's no gothic reveal of some uneasiness with the death of the mother or the vagina shaped statues all over the property.

The campiness extends to these characters playing the game a few times, body switching and being extra horny together to fuck in different bodies. It feels more like a thing teenagers would do- with each of them sticking to what they felt they were in high school. The main focus around the couple's inability to communicate isn't really that interesting- relying more on tropes of bad communication and body image issues. So questions of race or gender aren't fully explored (the body switching doesn't really cross genders). Perhaps there could have been more body horror moments, but the "WTF is happening" moments and actors playing up other characters are kooky enough for popcorn fun.
