Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person
2023 Directed by Ariane Louis-Seize
Horror Marathon 2024 Day 26 Film 53
She's a vampire that hasn't had her first bite and he's the boy of her dreams- accepting that he's done living. They find their loneliness a little less lonely together. They are able to simply feel safe with each other's otherness. This film exists in the vulnerable spaces- of opening up to someone when society rejects you. The awkward angst of rejection and acceptance. It’s a buzzy ephemeral feeling of a first vampire kiss- finally growing in fangs and sinking in.
The film is all about romance and the relation to our own eventual demise. As a symbol of Death vampires are often imbued with animal sensuality- of allowing base desires to bubble up. But changing the context if being Death is your expected role do you also have to be scary? What if that's just not you? What if you've yearned for food in Quebec poutine delight and miss the sunshine on your face? Instead of feeling isolated from society her heart opens to compassionate death as love for humanity. Horror can be a lot of things- and finding happiness in death's embrace doesn't have to be unsettling. For those with goth sensibility it's a way of life.
It also made me nostalgic for the kind of romance in sharing your quirky likes with another- of making mix tapes for your crush. Instead of just writing about this movie perhaps listening to a few tunes will get you in the vibe for the deadpan black humor and quirky love of this film.
So here's my mix tape- for all of you vampire lovers, goth ghouls, and creatures of the night.
