death Spa

1988 Directed by Michael Fischa

Horror Marathon Day 18 Film 29

This one is for the 2am viewing- a tech connected health spa is overrun by the computer controlling all of the equipment. There's a backdrop of 80s jazzercize sweat and campy stupidity as people are die from being baked in a sauna or have their arms torn off doing machine flys.

The idea may seem silly, but I could certainly see this kind of horror updated with some of the new home gym equipment being hacked for higher and higher resistances. Though I love the huge computer room in the back room of a gym. The goofy premise is that people still keep going to this gym after there are deaths too-- even having a costume party since I think that's required in 80s slashers.

Lots of random nudity and towards the end it goes even more gonzo with the computers and some ghost within the machine. Because most of the deaths are from the circumstance it feels a bit more like a spooky or dream nightmare. The exploding gore is pretty crassly funny too. Great for B movie madness in leotards. "Besides I'm beta and you're VHS."
